âWhatâs eating at you, kiddo?â Mr. Miller was standing behind the counter, a pleasant smile on his face. Heâd turned some music on softly, older tunes from his youth that he liked, and he was bobbing his head gently to the beat. âYou look about as somber as this weather.â
Rebecca watched the rain running down the windows, thinking it very much reflected the way she felt in her soul. How could she possibly explain to her father what was happening in her life without making it seem like she blamed her parents for it? All her troubles centered right there in Carlton, after all. âI donât know. Just one of those days, I guess.â
âThereâs nothing better to do on a rainy day than to dance it away!â he said happily. It was a phrase heâd used often when Rebecca was a child, bored while she was stuck inside on a dreary day. He came around the counter, moving much more slowly than he used to back in those days, and took her hands in his.
âI donât want to dance.â She kept her feet stubbornly in one place while he swung her arms in his. âYou shouldnât even be dancing.â
âNonsense.â He lifted her hand above her head, and when Rebecca didnât twirl, he took a slow circle around her instead. âGetting up and moving around is exactly what I need to do to keep these old limbs spry. Iâm sure itâs good for you, too, even if youâre not an old coot like I am.â
âDadâ¦â She was fighting hard now to keep a straight face as her father shuffled around her gleefully. âStop it! Youâre going to make me laugh, and I donât want to right now!â
âOh, donât be such a spoilsport! You used to love dancing away the rain.â He pointed his fingers in the air and did a little boogie, which was a welcome sight after the fall heâd taken. Despite his advanced age, he still healed faster than a human man would have.
Still, there were so many things to think about as her parents got older. âI guess Iâve just grown up, but I canât say itâs made my life much easier.â
âAll right. Lay it on me.â Richard stopped dancing and flapped his hands toward his chest. âIâm listening.â
âItâs nothing that bad,â she said, backing off a little. Her mind was incredibly heavy from worrying over her parents, taking care of the store, fighting with Madison, and figuring out how she felt about Dean, but she didnât want to lay all of that on her dad. âI was curious about something, though. How close are you and Mom with the clan these days?â
He gave her a thoughtful look, and for a minute, Rebecca thought he was going to ask her why. Fortunately, he didnât. âWeâve never been the most active members, but you know that. We often donât even go to the meetings anymore, just because weâre busy. We content ourselves with a bit of news, and of course, weâd offer whatever help they asked for.
